Twenty years ago, Hammersmith resident, Angela, was in Kenya counting flamingoes! She had won an Earthwatch Millennium Award for people over 50 to take part in international conservation projects. In return, she had a grant to invest in a local project, part of the think global, act local philosophy. Angela started a conservation project to restore the Walled Garden - the Friends of the Walled Garden. The garden was a neglected mess – choking weeds, a disused pond, vandalised seating huts. Her project, with the support of the Ravenscourt Society, would reveal the beauty of the scented walled garden as a valuable asset for the local community. Angela's call out for local volunteers was successful some of whom continue to come by each month. Angela is particularly pleased that the pandemic has increased the volunteer numbers as people engage in local community projects and gardening was one of the few things people could do. She loves to see the enjoyment that the gardening experience brings to the group.
